Perfect Binding.

We offer a full perfect binding and PUR binding service. Working with customers who are new to the process and existing customers who want us to help them find innovative binding solutions.

Folding

All flat sheets are folded into sections.

Collating

The folded sections are then put in the correct order and onto the Pantera's gatherer, they are collated together to form the text or book block.

Trimming Covers

All covers are pre-trimmed oversize to the size of the finished book and match the section size of the text. These covers are then inserted into the cover feeder on the Pantera binder.

Binding

The collated block then enters the Pantera binder, where it’s spine is prepared by a milling action to maximise the glue penetration. Spine glue is applied to the book’s prepared spine and side glue is applied to form a hinge on both the front and back pages of the book next to the spine. This glued book block meets up with the cover feeder, which releases and pre-scores the spine width and book hinges before matching the two together. The cover is then pressed onto the book block in the nipping unit. A series of conveyors transfer the untrimmed book to the Merit S Trimmer.

Three Knife Trimming

The Merit S trimmer finishes the perfect bound book off. Trimming off the foredge, head and foot of the untrimmed book making the book the correct size. The finished book is then sent out to a stacker unit to be packed.

Drilling

The Iram 12 multi-headed drill gives you the option of an additional service; to drill 1, 2, 3 or 4 holes along the spine of a book so that it can be inserted into a ring binder for presentation purposes.

PUR Option

PUR Binding follows the exact same process except we change over the glue from Perfect Binding Adhesive to PUR Adhesive by exchanging the glue pots. PUR glue reacts with the moisture content in the paper. This chemical reation creates a much stronger bind than the conventional glue.

We recommend PUR binding for

  • Report and Accounts
  • Require a long shelf life
  • Books which undergo temperature changes
  • Heavy stocks
  • Stocks which are against the grain
  • High page content.

PUR books can not be opened until the glue has cured this can take a maximum of 24 hours, once the binding process is complete.
